Note From Jim & Rose:

Happy New Year!
2007 was an outstanding year for Blue Moon Glassworks. We had the privilege of teaching many of you glass art - stained glass, glass fusing or glass beadmaking on the torch. Some of you learned all three!

As we begin the new year, we want to thank each of you for your patronage and for the vitality you bring to Blue Moon Glassworks. We have seen talented people connecting to glass art with a passion and this is what makes opening the doors of Blue Moon Glassworks each morning so worthwhile.

We hope this year will be an exciting one for you. We already have a lot planned here at Blue Moon Glassworks. Therefore, we felt it was time to start sending a newsletter out each month, to help you stay informed with all that's going on.

Each month you will find information on upcoming classes & guest information, a featured product that you may need in your studio, tips and solutions to problems that often arise, and our favorite section will include YOU. Each month we will have an "Artist of the Month" where we will feature an artist like you along with their work.

We often say, one of the best things about being here at Blue Moon Glassworks is having the opportunity to help people do what they enjoy doing. We hope this newsletter will help us help you with your next piece of art.

Come see us!

Mark Your Calendar:

Our first Special Instructor of the year is Jennifer Geldard.  Her class, "Beyond the Round Bead" is an excellent class where Jennifer teaches methods that help guide the artist in finding their own self-expression.  This class filled quickly this year, so if you are interested in being in one of her future classes, let us know and we will add you to the interest list for next year.

You can still see Jennifer in action at 7:00pm on Saturday February 23, 2008. Jennifer will be giving a demonstration. Visit Jennifer's website at www.glassgirl.com.

Jim's Stained Glass Tip:

When soldering the back side of a copper foil project, lay it on a damp towel.  This will pull the heat away from the front side and prevent melting through to the finished solder on the front.

Artist of the Month:

Suzanne Bonniwell

Suzanne Bonniwell recently took our beginners Lead & Copper Foil class.   She had already been taught some stained glass skills by her mother and had built a lamp using the copper foil method.  She wanted to learn the lead method of construction because she had a few windows in her home for which she wanted to build stained glass windows.  Mid-way through the class, Suzanne brought in a design for her large garden tub window in her bathroom.  Needless to say, I was a bit surprised at the size of the window (45"x45"),

but Suzanne seemed very confident and capable of the task at hand.  The final project turned out incredible.

I hope you enjoy seeing the pictures of her work-in progress as well as the final installed window.

Great work Suzanne!

What you may have Missed:

We had an open torch night on New Years Eve that turned out to be a blast. We couldn't think of a better way to bring in the New Year. Several others apparently agreed with us. There's nothing like bringing in the year to torches and Classic Rock'n'Roll. We are sorry you weren't all there with us.  Don't forget, most Saturdays we have open torch from 10am-1pm. The cost is $40 and includes torches, tools and annealing kilns (Glass is not included). The torches fill up, so remember you can always email or call in advance and reserve a torch. We always have a great time, and the education you get from peeking at your neighbor is always an added extra bonus.
Next Open Torch: February 16, 2008.

Lisa's Lampworkers Tip:

I dip a lot of mandrels and I don't like it. So when I work in my own studio, I dip my mandrel into the bead release as far as I can. Usually 3/4 of the length of the mandrel is dipped. When I go to create my bead I place it far on the dipped end, and once the bead has been annealed, I simply take the bead off and the mandrel is ready for another bead. I can usually get 4-5 uses out of the mandrel before I need to dip it again.

The Austin Fireflies had a great meeting in January.   We were happy Loyd Blankenship was able to make it this month.   He gave a demo on creating a marble using a Vin-pin.

Craig Lewis of  Lewis Flameworks  stopped by and wowed us with a couple demos using Boro glass.
